I had been living with a herniated disc since July 07 before having it removed 10-8-08 through microdiscectomy. Pre-surgery I had pain that radiated down either leg during the week due its central location at L4-L5. It was rather large and the orthopedic doctor and neurosurgeon were surprised I hadn't lost control of my bladder. I did have nurabness in my toes. I also have two slight protrusions at L3-L4 and L5-S1 but they weren't compressing any nerves and the surgeon wasn't concerned with them. I am but I guess I will wait and see what those do. The neurosurgeon told me I would walk the same day of the surgery and in 4-6 weeks I'd be fine. I knew I would have pain from the incision itself and he said 90% will not have the same problems as before. I still feel sharp twinges sitting up in bed like i did before but he said since the nerves were compressed for so long it would be awhile before they stretched back out. Sometimes while walking I feel like something has popped out of place and it hurts to take a step further. My main concern is that my left leg is still having some pain radiating down. If I'm sleeping and laying on my left side, after awhile the whole leg is aching and I have to turn over. Even now while typing its throbbing and my ankle feels weak. I haven't done any bending or twisting. I have been doing a little physical therapy at home. I don't do much walking except around the house. I did try walking around a store the other day and before long i was aching too much and grabbed a scooter. I'm not looking for a diagnosis but have any of you with the same surgery had residual leg pain like this? And how long before that went away if ever? oh and i'm only 24 and haven't had children yet. if any women have had this done before having children did this affect your pregnancy at all?
