pain meds after a week post op

Thursday will be a week post op actually. I had surgery on my stomach to patch hernia in my stomach. My check up isn't until Friday and I am worried about a couple of things. First of all, I am still in a lot of pain. When I get up out of bed it feels like a stabbing/pinching sensation on my side and the bulge that used to be there is way bigger then before. I'm suprised that it is really black and swelled, but it's really hard and bigger tan before. My doctor said that she thinks the toradol should be enough from here on out, and she can't prescribe me strong pain pills anymore. I cried when she told me that! Like I said I am really concerned about the bulge too. Has anyone had an experience like this, or just simply have any suggestions? Am I wrong for asking for more pain pills when I am in pain?

Pain pills are habit forming, best to get off of them as soon as possible. There are other meds to help with pain that are not habit forming.

Sometimes we have to grin and bear it to a certain extent for our own good.

The discomfort you are feeling when getting out of bed could be due to the way you are getting up. Best to turn over on your side and push up with your arms, this takes the strain off the stomach muscles which in turn pulls on the incision.

I do not like to hurt either, however, the liver and kidneys can only tolerate a certain amount of pain medications without shutting down.

You are only a week post-op from a major sugery, so no it's not uncommon for you to still be in quite a bit of pain. It takes a while to recover from hernia surgery because they have to repair the fascia. I don't feel it's out of line at all for you to still need something stronger than the toradol for your pain.

Toradol is only supposed to be taken VERY short term as it can cause stomache ulcers, and is also very hard on the liver too.

Yes, narcotic pain meds are habit forming, BUT with all due respect, I have to disagree in part with what Misty said. As long as your pain med comsumption is monitored by your doctor and prescribed properly, being on them for two weeks isn't going to cause major trauma to your liver or kidneys. As a matter of fact, being on Toradol for two weeks straight can cause more damage than being on an opioid medication for two weeks.

I'm sorry you are still hurting, but it is normal to still hurt a week after hernia repair. I hope you start to feel much better soon!

PS- I want to let you know, I take medications for chronic pain conditions and have been on them for several years now (every day I take these meds) and my liver & kidneys are in fine condition and functioning properly. I know because I have them checked regularly- doctors orders.
