Pain like being stuck with a pin in lower back???

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone! I am new and have a question. I had PLIF on L4-L5 on 02-08-07 and was doing great until about a month ago. I experienced pain from the back all the way down the right leg to foot. I used moist heat, rested, took Soma and a few pain meRAB and it got somewhat better. Now I occasionally have a "sticking" sensation in the lower back - right "out of the blue." I swear it feels like someone has come up behind me with a hat pin - very weird. Anyone else have this happen to them? I go to the neurosurgeon tomorrow. I have a very rare disease call Takayasu's Arteritis Vasculities and surgery is dangerous for me so it was a big decision to have the fusion last February - just can't see having back surgery every year. Anyway, your input would be appreciated! Thanks.
 
Happy Valentines Day Leap! The only thing I could venture to guess is that maybe your hardware is pinching something ???? I wish I had some other worRAB of wisdom but unfortunately I don't. I am not familiar with Takayasu's Arteritis Vasculities much less I don't think I could say it. However, I wanted to at least welcome you to the forum and tell you that you have found a great support group to vent, cry, and share those strides we make in our recovery. Good luck and I look forward to chatting with you.

I have had problems with my back since March 07 which has just hit me out of the blue without warning. Since then I have had umpteen MRI's and CT scans. In my stay in the hosp back in April 07 they done an MRI with contrast that is when they found and bulging disc at my L4-L5 but dr's say that the bulging disc isn't that bad and can't understand the pain I am having. Pain that consist of my back getting up in the morning to where I can't even walk cause my back aches really bad , PT made it all worse it aggravated it tremendously ...I Have had 3 epidural injections not one has worked except for like 2 weeks that was the best 2 weeks of my life ever but I am back to pain and agony again about mid way up my back it feels like someone twisting my back causing a burning sensation up to my neck down to my feet which just hit me a week an half ago. All the dr's do is give me meRAB none compare to the relief I have had for that 2 weeks so something is going on which is killing me....Chronic back pain isn't easy I am on an antidepressant just so I can get reasonable amount of sleep and to deal with the chronic pain everday which hasn't been easy...good luck I really do feel for you since I am going thru the same thing that you are

I hate these pain stories. I feel so bad for everyone suffering.

I'm replying because I get those sharp jabby pains out of the blue too. Sometimes it happens when I lean too much on my right foot, or twist wrong.

I put my back out and have a bulging disc L4-L5 from picking up a dog back in Deceraber. My bulging disc isn't suppose to be too bad, but it sill causes pain. It started out as electrocution style pain shooting all of the way down my right leg, now it's the little sharp jabby pains in my butt and lower back. It's definitley the sciatic nerve. I think the tissue around it gets inflamed and that's when it's worse. I can actually feel swelling in my lower back when it's inflamed. I also have a slipped disc in L5-S1, which has been a pain off and on for 20 years, but not as bad as this bulging disc.

I go to the nuero tomorrow about my MRI results. I pray that we all get relief soon!

Thanks to each of you for your replies. I am headed to Dallas shortly to see the neurosurgeon hoping all is not as bad as I am thinking! I am so thankful to finding this message board!
 
To leap and cheryl...I pray that you two will find answers and get "pain relief" from your upcoming neurosurgeon visits. I pray that the surgeons will be helpful, respectful, and be willing to do whatever it takes to take care of each of your conditions. Please keep us all updated about your neurosurgeon visits!
