Pain in quadriceps

I couldn't find the right topic to post this under, given that I don't know what's causing this.

Over the past couple of years, I've noticed a pain just below the hip joints that bothers me especially if I squat down, to pick something up or look at something very low. Sometimes it bothers me when I walk, and sometimes when I'm lying in bed at night it will keep me up unless I take an Alleve.
I didn't think anything about it at first because the doctor told me 10 years ago that I have "the beginnings" of osteoarthritis in one of my hip joints, and I just figured my arthritis was getting worse.

But a few months ago, I realized the pain is really lower than my hips. I used to do aerobics daily, and it reminds me of the pain I used to have after a really good workout....pain that always got better when I stretched my quads carefully. It's right at the top of my thighs (on both sides). Once I get it (I just did sweeping my kitchen floor), it continues to hurt for awhile, and stretching doesn't help.

I am also dealing with a weight gain of about 100 pounds from 1996 to last year, while several other medical crises (depression, thyroid dying, chronic unremitting migraines) have come and gone. I figured that might have to do with the pain too. Those are getting better and I am losing (25 of the 100 so far!) with a crazy new diet: eating less and moving more! ;-)

I have read that quad pain can be a sign of diabetes....I did have a glucose test about 5 years ago and the results were negative.

Is there anything else this might be a sign of?
