Hi Moommin - Sounds like it could be the Sciatic nerve, that starts in the upper butt area on the same side as the leg thats hurting, sends like electrical sensations, and burning /tingling sensations ...wraps around the hip and down the leg. Can be pretty painful. A doc could give him excerises to do, and a muscle relaxant, and / or presription strength Naproxen...
I had it, and iced helped..... also, I went to a massage therapist, they usually know ALL About The Sciatic nerve thing, they will know right where to go, and probably suggest some excersises as well. Takes a couple of weeks....
