Pain after Endoscopy

I had an my 2nd endoscopy done on the 21st June (6 days ago) It showed I had multiple polyps - all else looked okay - they took biopsies, 6 in total, waiting for results )0: The scope seemed to go okay - I got throat spray. However 6 days on I am in severe pain since straight after - it feels like I have something going on in the middle of the chest area - it feels awful and is really painful - I also have been getting so much burning - nothing to do with reflux - it is totally unlike that kind of pain. I wish I could describe this better - It radiates through to my back and when I eat it gets worse - I thought about pancreaitis - and still worry that it could be that - I never had this pain before and in the past 7 months of pain I have suffered this is the worst - I've cried for days. I seen the doctor and he said it would settle down - I also called the hospital who said 'I doubt it has anything to do with the endoscope!!!' Mixed messages. I'm finding it hard to concentrate on anything as the pain gets in the way - nothing is taking it away at all )0: My 1st endoscope went fine - I had gastritis - they never mentioned this this time round so it must be gone - Karen :(
 
I don't know if you will read this but I had the same problems after an endoscopy and as I write this I'm in severe burning pain at 3am.

A year ago I went in to finally find out why I am sick to my stomach and have diarrhea all the time. I always thought it was related to my gallbladder being out years before.

Anyway, I finally got the guts to go and get an endoscopy done and immediately the day after I had the worst heartburn of my entire life that lasted for days and days and days and when I didn't have the burning I had the lump feeling in my throat and esophagus. I called my gasto and he said Oh it's your gerd but I told him that I never had this pain or lump feeling before. Eventually the PPI's started to help with the burning and lump feeling, the belching went away as well. I still new I was "not right" my stomach was still worse, but I was thankful the burning went away.


That was until 3 weeks ago, all of a sudden the lump feeling came back and and with it the burning, burping etc.

I'm terrified, I have no health insurance till the end of January and a year ago I was diagnosed with Barrett's, esophagus ulcers, small
Hiatal hernia, and mild gastritis. With being diagnosed with all that I still never EVER had this lump, burning, burping discomfort before the endo! I'm so scared for what this is all doing to my Barrett's.

I am actually doing fine today, and yesterday. Tomorrow is my follow up appointment to discuss my endoscopy findings and biopsies so I am actually surprised that I have no symptoms to discuss with him. I am going to pick up my first refill of Dexilant later today as i am just finishing up my first month's supply. All of my symptoms have disappeared but I am now going to see what if anything brings them back on. I am heading to a party this weekend where I will be eating differently and hopefully having a drink or two so I will be testing the waters so to speak. I will certainly keep you posted tomorrow and after the weekend. I know my LPR is still there and that breakthrough symptoms do occur on and off but I am happy to be on an "off" time right now.

Karen I know you wrote this back in June but it is now October and I am 6 days after my endoscopy and I have the exact complaints that you write about in terms of symptoms. Can you tell me what ultimately happened with you? Did the chest discomfort, etc. go away after more time? I have an appointment next week with GI doctor to go over biopsy results so I can discuss it then but I am hoping it will be gone by the two week mark. It gets markedly worse after I eat. Lump in bottom of esophagus area by collarbone and radiating pain in my chest around to my back and my sides.
 
Hi - it has been 4 months since I had the endoscope and the symptoms have never got better - The lump in the throat feeling - the severe burning sensations - discomfort in the chest etc - It has totally well and truly got me beat. I have done lots and lots of research on the endoscope procedure - I had one back in January also - after that one my pain and symptoms changed - then the same after the one in June - I did read in one article that the endoscope tube can damaged the little valve that sits at the bottom of the esophagus (goes into the stomach)... It may be true or not - But I have to say after each endoscope things changed and escalated - I have sever flare ups - the feeling of pain during eating and swallowing - burning in the whole upper part of the stomach and esophagus - the most current flare up has lasted 3 weeks - when it dies down the pain is easier to cope with - it just never leaves me though - The pain is the oddest feeling and so hard to describe - I have the doctors and the specialists so unsure of what is going on - No medication is working - I have tried and tested many - I am fed up of being fed up - I wish I had a person to share my 'pain' with - I hope your pain gets better - Do please keep in touch - It helps to talk - Karen :wave:
 
Thats great news to hear - you must be feeling so much more relaxed with feeling good. I am sure your results will be fine - saying that as your feeling better - It is good to introduce the fooRAB back in and see if there are any triggers - I did that - I really eat most things now and it has no rhyme or reason to the flare up's. The bad fooRAB they say not to eat - none ever bother me - I often think many people stop eating all those things and it makes no change - and their diet is so borning - Acidic fooRAB - tomato based fooRAB - apples - oranges - pizza - ketchup - coffee - tea - soda etc - Theory I think! Enjoy the party and keep in touch!
 
Hi - You know I have heard this from many people - after the endoscope they have different troubles prior to the proceedure - I often think the little valve (the LES) gets damaged - no matter how careful they are you have to consider that going in and out of the stomach etc - taking samples and back out again - I am totally convinced that the valve was damaged and that is what causes the burning - burping - discomfort - the lot - I had nothing like this at all beforehand. I often wish I didn't bother to get the scope done - I am sure I / you / and many others would be not suffering so much if that had been the case. Your barratts condition - I really feel a specialist neeRAB to consider this as you do not want any further damage being done by more acid / bile coming up - The are so passive at times - It sure makes me extremely angry. I feel you pain and you worry - I really honesly do :(
 
wow I am so sorry to hear that. Both for you (and for me). I do notice one symptom that increased trifold after this procedure and that is gas. Burping mostly. Like air gets in through my mouth and it is trapped in that inflammation area and neeRAB to come back up. I have not been allowed to use ibuprofin since last wednesday's procedure but starting tonight I will take some and see if it helps bring down what feels like severe inflammation behind the collarbone area. The symptoms I was having leading up to my endoscopy are actually gone which were burning in the throat and in the mouth like after you eat a spicy meal. I have had a globus feeling in my throat before but not for so long while on medication. I feel like being on Dexilant 60mg every day should be keeping these symptoms at bay. I will give it some more time and maybe watch what I eat (I haven't in the past week as I had an affair to go to and ate and drank things that are normally on the no no list for acid reflux and lpr sufferers). I will definitely let you know how things are working out. By they way... any results from the two endoscopies? Why did you have two so close together in time?
 
I'm so glad I found this thread I have searched for a year and found very little info about this. It's bitter sweet, I wish none of us have to go through this but since we are it's nice to know we are not alone. I should have known something was up with my endo when a woman came in the office ranting and raving of how horrible things went and demanding her files. The office was full but that should have been clue nuraber one. Second clue was the day of my appt. I waited at the hospital for 4 hours, I had my endo and colonoscopy. I got home at 10pm. I am losing weight now since I can't each much, I find all sweets are a huge No-No. anything spicy, as well. I drink water and tiny meals and sometimes that helps or at the very least does not make it worse.

I have to wonder why my antacid medicine is no longer working after a year being on it. Today I feel the same as right after the endo. I think if I do have another one I will not allow them to go directly into my stomach. I just have to wait till Noveraber for the check-up and then Jan. till I can get any tests done. I just worry that my Barrett's is worse and I'm more upset that my second opinion said my doctor did not take enough biopsy so he couldn't actually tell me if I had it or not. I'm in lirabo as we all are.

Karen, I wish you the best I do hope you feel better soon, I hope we all do and I'm so glad others seem to be doing better today.. I guess we take one day at a time and keep fighting the good fight. Hugs to all of you.:)
 
I had the two endoscopes rather close as things got so bad after the first one - I ended up in the A&E three times - and each time they said it was acid reflux / or indigestion - That really got me very upset as I know the difference of those conditions to what I was suffering. The stomach polyps were nothing to worry about - They said they are caused by using PPI's for reflux - The other tests for H Pylori and celiac were negative to - The surgeon said to me that I possibly suffer from a condition called 'visceral hypersensitivity' < edited >

I have that awful globus feeling all the time - It really does get me down - I'm forever trying to tell the doctors that I have the feeling of inflammation - I know it is not inflammation but that is the feeling. Karen
 
I was thinking the same thing, either that or they aggravate the problems we have, for awhile I thought i contracted a bacteria or something. I was tested for H. pylori afterward, but it was negative. So now I tend to agree with the damage to the LES. I went and had a second opinion shortly after the endoscope (over a year ago) and told him that I was worse the day after the endo and he looked at me like I was a crazy woman. Then he said well I think you need a gastric dumping test. I know I need another endo done to see how my barrett's is doing but I'm so afraid of that. Do you know if there is another other procedure they can do that is not so invasive?

I do hope that we all get some answers and if we do that maybe we can give hope for each other. I am so depressed, I don't want to live this way anymore.
 
I've been reading your thread and feel horrible about the experiences you have had with your endoscopies. I've had 3 in the last 4 years. One was in a hospital and two were at an endoscopic center. They were all done by the same doctor though who has tons of experience. The one at the hospital had a much longer wait than the ones at the other center. I had only a 5-10 minute wait at the endoscopic center and they moved us in and out quickly but I still felt they gave me personal attention. I did have light sedation for all of them so that probably helped, but I still had a sense from every nurse and doctor that cared for me that they all took this too seriously to rush. They took the time to confirm my issues and gave me the chance to ask questions, didn't rush their answers and took time to explain to me everything they are doing. While your experiences weren't so good, I just want you to know that there are doctors out there who do take care. If you do need a follow-up endoscopy, I'd recommend looking for a second opinion from another doctor that comes recommended to you. People on this board can help if you want.

BarbsEsq, as for the PPI's, I'm glad to hear they are helping. I actually have found some success with Dexilant and the related Prevacid Solutabs. If you don't already know, it might be worth your while to visit the manufacturers website for discount coupons for refills. There are many prescriptions out there where you can save a substantial amount by using those coupons. I'm currently saving $50/month on my co-pay for my Dexilant. I'm also saving on some of my other prescriptions as well. Helps a lot with the costs.

I do agree with all of you that reflux and digestive issues can be horrible to deal with. At times, I think the doctors haven't figured things out either.

I called the hospital after the endoscope to - they said the same to me - 'oh no an endoscope wouldn't cause that pain!' Welll after so much reading I know that is not the case - The specialist I seen in August said to me that people can take a reaction to a foreign object being out inside the body and he advised against any further internal testing for a while - I also thought afterwarRAB I had some kind of infection - inflamation - that is what it felt like - AWFUL - It does aggrivate things - and the lining is so thin and delicate I guess even the best scopist can be a bit of track!

My first one was horrendous - The surgeon was very rough - as soon as he was finished he was on his mobile phone to his wife - 2 feet away from me talking about his day - I honestly could not believe it!

Today I feel really down - the lump feeling and the thick to swallow is really on it's way back up again - There is no rhyme or reason to it. I kept a food diary for 6 months - I cut out everything - put it all back in - nothing made any change - I have tried all the health related things and spend hundreRAB of pounRAB - no change. After reading for almost a year I can see how common this is - so many young people suffer - People who are so healthy - it just happens?

I think the scope is the only test to look down the throat - When they do your esophagus they will only go so far though - so it's not back into the stomach - I really would have to think about another full blown scope into the stomach after what happened last time.

It helps to read on the forums online - you then know your so not on your own - It can make you feel a little better to as it often helps with the worry knowing how others deal with things and it is nothing sinister. In January I thought I had stomach cancer and made myself so ill I didn't eat for 6 weeks - it was awful - I don't want to return their again.

My days are like yours - up and down - My life this year has been non existant - I have been home most of the time - I go to work but I just really race home when I'm done - You loose interest in things as you just can't consentrate on things at times. I sound like the picture of doom and gloom! Thanks for your reply - One day - one day - we will be free and get to the bottom of this, much xxx
 
Thanks MountainReader... I picked up my three month supply of Dexilant yesterday and yes I knew about the coupon from the manufacturer. Imagine my surprise when the woman at the pharmacy counter told me that I owed nothing for the presciption. The coupon covered the copy that my regular insurance did not. I used to be on the Prevacid solutabs which also worked great but now my insurance doesn't cover prescription Prevacid anymore. That's part of where my problems got worse, when I started taking Generic Prevacid which caused my symptoms to flare up terribly. Whatever soreness and pain and discomfort I felt after my endoscopy is finally gone, took a little over one week but I have no residual issues. I know this isn't the last of the breakthrough symptoms though. I am learning to just hold on through the worst of it and it does pass.
