Today I watched Mitsudomoe. It was funny. But then at episode 4. I felt like murdering who ever made it. They continued using the breast = comedy thing. I am female and I still find breast funny. But when it's overused and put out there every 10 seconds, I find it offensive, annoying, and not funny. It's just like when your friend keeps using a joke so much that it's not funny anymore.

It's not just that show. Kuroshitsuji season 2 is also working the extra unneeded fan service. Episode 5 had more fan service than the whole first season. It just doesn't fit in the with plot at all.

I told a guy friend, and all he did was give the usually "Sit down, shut up, and stay off the soap box" thing. Our little group picks anime to watch. But almost every anime so far has had overused fan service, and overused torpedo breasts. I have a hard time ignoring something that's shoved in my eye balls repeatedly.

I know it won't ruin the whole series, but It's enough to annoy me into stopping in the middle of the series to count to 3 a few times. I understand sexual appeal brings money, but repeated use is annoying. I'm not saying they should stop, but I am saying they need to cut back. I'm pretty sure people watch the anime for the story and not the fan service.

Saying "don't like, don't watch" doesn't help either, 'cause I won't know it has fan service till I do watch it and a warning isn't given. Reviews give spoilers sometimes so I tend to not read them. Some animes you can just tell have fan service, others you can't.

Excuse my sloppy rant. I was mad while i typed. I tried my best to put it in order.

Fan service overuse

Shows are made to make profits. The shows that get made are a function of what people pay for.

Why am I saying this? Because, if you want to see different types of shows produced, voting with your dollar and not buying/watching such shows would probably be more effective than soapboxing on an internet forum.

Also, you might respond "I don't want to read reviews" to the "Then just don't watch such shows" reply, but Mitsudomoe is pretty obviously a fanservice-heavy show on every level.

I can't really understand youre surprise. Ok I haven't personally seen episode 4 but from what I have in 1-3 this show is basically completely non sophisticated humor. That there should be an excessive fan service episode does not surprise me. Nor really should it you. I understand your point as many shows I feel have too much fanservice these days. Even as a guy it interferes with the plot I mean in the middle of something dramatic happening it kinda spoils the mood if the show starts flashing boobs at you. But in something like Mitsudomoe I don't really get your surprise.

I still doubt people pay for the show just because of fan service. The story is what most pay for.

Not buying/watching the show is what I already do. I don't have a problem with fan service. Only when it's heavy and just plain not related to the plot.

I wouldn't think a show with 11 year old school children would be all that heavy on fan service, especial when the characters look younger than they really are. And the summary i read for the show said nothing about breasts, panties, or whatever.

@RHachicho

It wasn't really just the episode itself. Just the repeated breast jokes in every episode got old and annoying. If the show is meant to be funny, I understand the sex jokes, and fan service, but the same joke over and over? Uh uh it just makes the show less funny. The summary i read for the show didn't tell me about the fan service or anything. So it was a surprise when it shouldn't have been

One episode of anything is usually enough of an indication of what the fanservice level is going to be like. Watch that and drop the series if the series exceeds your quota. Watch 3-5 if you're unsure. Problem solved. It's generally what people around here refer to here as the 5 episode rule.

In some shows, fan service isn't there till later episodes. So one episode won't make much of a difference with shows that wait till later. but you are right when it comes to shows that indicate the fan service level on the first episode.

Aye but remember people have preferences when it comes to humor. Same with anything. I know someone in real life who is very intelligent. But simply can't find intelligent humor funny he will watch sexual innuendo and knob gags and laugh his head off at them though.

Personally I find shows like Mitsudomoe funny in small quantities. As long as a show acknowledges what it is and dousn't try to overeach and tack on some kind of half cocked serious sideline. I can definately understand if you've run into trouble trying to marathon stuff like this. Generally 2 episodes in 1 sitting is my max. Then I have to watch something with a plot.

If it shows up later it's usually not the main focus of the show, minor in the grand scheme, and goes away. You do have to realize though that since you're a female anime fan, and most anime produced is shounen and seinen (anime for boys and adult men respectively) that you are going to encounter that a lot. If it bothers you, I suggest trying to limit your viewing to shows in the encyclopedia here labeled with shoujo and Jousei (girls and adult women respectively).

Otherwise, I could try and put together a list for you, but you'd probably be better off if a woman did it though, since as a guy I don't mind it and it tends to slip my mind what has what such content. Still that route would still get you quite a few hits since I've seen over 800 anime.

I'm gonna divert back to one of the oldest advertising mottoes "sex sells" now it may be that some series are overusing it but there is still a market of people who enjoy seeing fanservice more than the healthy amount (if there really is such a thing) but it still markets to both that small group as well as groups of people who enjoy series with some fanservice as long as they are able to get past the extra amount and into the plot. A series that perfectly exemplifies my point would be Mahou Sensei Negima. A sickening amount of fanservice, but a good plot and good characters.

@cobra88king8

I know sex sells. But overuse is still overuse. It does get aggravating seeing the same thing over and over. As long as a show has a good plot and knows when and when not to fan service the viewers It's ok.

@Kruszer

Don't get me wrong, I do like fan service. It's just some shows over do it to the point where it's just pointless. I've seen many shows targeted at women that still use fan service, it's just not as heavy as shows targeted at men.

@RHachicho

Sexual jokes are always funny to people that don't mind them. I find them funny as long as they're not repeated constantly.

Maybe the problem was that I tried to marathon it.

I'm usually ehhh about fanservice as humor in large quanitites too. It's not that I really have any moral issue or am easily offended it just seems a bit immature like we're going back to 7th grade where you overexploit "adult things" to feel like you're cool. ahahahahaa I saw boobie!! ahahaha the cherry coke was spiked, I think I'm drunk (it totally couldn't just be that I'm acting like an idiot by the power of suggestion), etc.

Okay, why not try giving these a shot then. They're series that either didn't have a lot of fanservice or were sophisticated enough to ignore what's there. Some of them still do include the equivalent of some rated R sexual content but have story power to match that so it makes sense in context.

List

Of course this is all based on my memory though. :|

I have to agree with the OP to an extent. Even from my male perspective there has been some really cringe-worthy fan service as of late.

Perhaps it's because I'm older now (25) and don't quite have the rampant testosterone of an 18 year old, but I really don't find a lot of this stuff as attractive any more. Giant physics-defying breasts and constant panty shots serve to detract from any other purpose a scene might have.

This doesn't mean I hate fan service in general. Beach episodes, shower scenes and all those other self-contained service-centric moments are fine with me because they're fulfilling the only purpose they are aiming for and I can enjoy it for that. But when service is constantly rammed in your face in almost every scene I find it really boring.

Take High School of The Dead for example: I really liked the idea of a zombie survival / action anime, but can't enjoy it because every scene is permeated with a gratuitous service shot. The torpedo-breasted teacher can't even put on a seat belt without physics flying out of the window. It's like it's animated by a bunch of school kids.

Still, maybe I'm not the primary demographic for these sorts of things any more.

:D

I am another who gets anoyed with some of the overuse of fan service, it is like I want to enjoy what is hapening in the show, and they decide to throw giant breast bouncing and dangleing at me. The odd not overdone one can be nice, maybe do a good joke out of it, Fairy Tail has a nice subtlety to it, but I also remember Ladies vs Butlers which was amazingly over the top.
