Overrated Cartoons

Review every cartoon that you think is overrated!

Phineas and Ferb

Despite good intentions and some funny jokes, the show fails. I think I've seen about ten episodes. First off, it's horribly formulaic. The same thing happens in every episode! The plots were funny for one, two, maybe even THREE 10 minute segments! Then, guess what, Dan Povenmire and Mr. Marsh? WE NEED SOMETHING NEW! Plus, the plots aren't exactly balanced. It's hard to give three plots their time to shine in ten minutes.

Good points there with Phin and Pherb. I would have to agree with you on all of that.

Two other overated cartoons are Tak and the Power of Juju, and George of the Jungle Animated.

I loved the Tak games (and i usually hate everything that comes out of the THQ studios) but the show was simply overated. The comedy was NOT funny, and i just dont like that they carried over the game's animation style (3d) rather than just making a fun, 2D cartoon.

George of the Jungle. Ug.

I’m going to have to disagree with you on that one, as I believe that “Phineas & Ferb” has earned its success. Perhaps it is somewhat formulaic, but the writers have done a good job at keeping things fresh and it’s surprising how well all of the stories usually come together. Doofenshmirtz is an excellent comedic villain and I have really enjoyed the love/hate relationship that he has with Perry, as even though they are enemies, he is more interested in competing with him than taking over the tri-state area, which is his stated goal. Besides, can an animated program really be overrated when the masses aren’t singing its praises? It may get good ratings, but that actually proves that the series isn’t overrated. As the old saying goes, it’s not bragging if you can do it.

Personally, I’d have to go with “Sonic The Hedgehog”. As much as I loved Sonic SatAM, it’s not the dark-and-gritty masterpiece that so many of its loyalists have made it out to be. I tried watching a few episodes a while back when I was still a contributor on TVRage, but the series just wasn’t as entertaining as I had remembered. I still enjoyed it and I still like many of the characters, particularly Princess Sally, but I was moderately disappointed in regards to the quality of the episodes.

The only Phineas and Ferb plot that was funny was the one where Candace was in a movie...directed by her brothers. The only Perry the Platapus plot that was funny was the one that just replaced the phrase "boyfriend" with "nemesis" when Dr. Doofenshmirts broke up with Perry the Platapus. It was hilarious! Their love-hate relationship that you mentioned has only been seen in that episode...I think.

There was another episode where Doofenshmirtz covered Perry in chocolate and more-or-less trapped him. Doofenshmirtz had all of the time in the world to fulfill his master plan after that, but he was extremely hesitant because he wanted for Perry to try to stop him. It seems that taking over the tri-state area isn’t as important to him if Perry isn’t there to challenge him; Perry completes him and makes him who he is.

I haven’t seen many episodes of the series, so there may have been more scenes that I’m not aware of.

Pinky & the Brain -Not saying its bad but to me it gets old fast. I don't see why as many people love it.

Family Guy -annoying and unfunny in my opinion

South Park -see above

Ren And Stimpy. I really don't find it that funny, and I've seen the famous ones like "Stimpy's Invention" and "Space Madness", too. I never really liked John K.'s stuff, and I always thought that the voicework was really the best part of the show, not the designs and animation.

I don't really hate Invader Zim, but the sheer madness of its fanbase drives me insane.

These "what cartoons are overrated" threads never end up going well. Half the time it's blatantly obvious that most of the people posting in them have no idea what the term "overrated" truly means. A lot of the time these threads just amount to people complaining about shows they just don't like.

So true. It's just becomes another thread that people can use for to describe their least favorite show, regardless if it is or isn't overrated.

On that note, I didn't realize that Phineas and Ferb was overrated at all. I didn't know it was even popular at all. Its one of Disney Channel's few animated series on its lineup, but I didn't think it was popular enough to be called overrated.

I'm sorry but doesnt an "Overrated cartoon" have to be well liked? That's hardly what I would call the Tak cartoon or the new GotJ. Those shows are not well liked at all, so no one seem,s to be treating them better then they should be.

I think Bakasama put it pretty well. I just think it's the sort of thing that will never seem quite as good in retrospect or upon repeat viewings once that newness and sense of excitement that accompanies the first viewing has worn off.

It reminds me of old school anime like Dr. Slump, Kinnikuman, Kochi-Kame. It is more likable than most title running currently in Shonen Jump.

If anything more overrated than One Piece, it's Naruto. He is not a ninja, he's a wizard that lives in a world where they watched too many hours of Dragon Ball. Sad part I was fan, but after a while, I was like... "Why do I watch this show again?" After all Naruto is over rated to the point where it seems like a mainstream show, aka somehow surviving the last minutes and death of Toonami.

Spongebob seems a bit overrated for me. Sure it silly stupid fun, I know that it charm, but the fact that it get way too many spots on a network that seems to repeated the same 5 shows over and over again, doesn't help. I like Sponge, still do, if there an episode I like and I flip by it, I'll watch it. But his popularity seems a bit overblown by Nick, and the fanbase, that and you get attacked for it as much as saying that Naruto is overrated series.

How can George of the Jungle be overrated? It's not popular enough to be. Hardly anyone will admit to even watching it. Even Cartoon Network doesn't promote GotJ as much as it does it's other series such as Chowder, Flapjack and Total Drama Island.

The problem with these "overrated" threads is that too often, people will just chime in and call a show "overrated" without having a full grasp of the definition of the word. To be clear, "overrated" means that said series receives far more praise than one feels it deserves. A series is not overrated simply because you don't like it.

*murmurs* Kim Possible

See, I get that it's a lighter take on the quasi Superhero genre, but Kim is just you know, privileged and popular and has no tragedy or driving motivation for what she does and the fights have no real stakes. I know the misfit hero is a cliche but darn it, there are reasons the hero is a misfit. It's just too much that the rich, popular, successful, good looking person should also find the moral rectitude to fight evil without something affecting their well being. honestly.

There's room for all kinds of fictional heroes. No need to restrict them to brood angst ridden types or even just carefree types (As you mentioned with Kim Possible).
