Overheating 1999 Mazda Protege?

Hello, my car water temperature gauge is telling me that my car is overheating. But when I open the hood, there is no smoke, sweet smell, coolant is all there. I have not seen any leaks. What in the heck is going on. Also, my check engine light just came on today too. Any idea.

this might be a couple things since its a 99 i dont think its the radiator but it could be your thermostat or water pump
