The overdrive on my 2001 Ford Mustang V6 Auto Trans. does not kick in at higher speeds. Once the car gets to about 50 mph it shifts like its going into overdrive but the RPM's just rise and the car does not accelerate. If you push the Overdrive button to turn it off, it shifts back normal and will accelerate but runs at a higher RPM, and burns through gas much faster. I've also noticed that when I drive for longer than 15 min, when i park the car, I can hear a popping noise like its extremely hot around the transmission, but the car temp. reads normal. I'm not sure if this has something to do with the overdrive not working or not. I've been told that it may be a switch or a sensor. Someone else told me I may need a new transmission. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
