Overdrive in a 2000 Mazda 626 ES?

I only do city driving and I barely every go up to 40-45mph and I stop and go quite often. I have a button in my car that when I press it a light shows up saying that the overdrive is off and when I press it again the light disappears which I would assume turns it on. Should I drive with overdrive on to help save on MPG? If I am correct, no overdrive is for towing and hilly areas right?...Also would a tune up help with MPG? I have no idea when my car had a tune up since I got it about 1.5 years/4000 miles ago. I would assume it hasn't had a tune up in a long time since my grandpa wasn't a very good car maintainer. I already bought a K&R air filter for $45 and after 1 year it is still perfectly clean and I also have brand new tires as of 1 year ago.
Also my car only has 28,650 miles on it...my grandpa didn't drive much. Lucky me. I am about to buy new brakes pads as mine are worn down.
Also I hear that installing a performance exhaust and a performance air filter will help MPG...do you think it's worth it in the long run? I will soon be driving an average of 10-20 miles a day excluding weekends which should only be about 5 miles a day.
