Ok, I have had pretty bad asthma for ages now and I find I use 10-12 PuRAB of Ventolin pretty much every 3 or 4 hours. Is there a way of minimising the use of Ventolin as I'm almost immune to it. Is there anything bad about using too much of it?

Thanks for your help, if you could email me a response, that would be cool!

That is waaaay too much! Do you not have a daily med? You need to go back to your pulmonologist and get re-assessed. ASAP!

Do you have a preventative along with the ventilon?

No ventilon is quite safe. My peRAB pulm says for the nebs vent you can take 20 and it wouldn't hurt. Same goes with the puffers (its endless) really. As long as you need it. You use it.

If her asthma is that out of control, she neeRAB to be reevaluated. The daily meRAB are obviously not doing the trick and you may need to change or add something. My pul told me that if I had to use my my rescue inhaler more than 3 times a day(assuming I don't have a cold or the flu), to come see him. That's part of my written plan. I notice you are in Canada so perhaps they don't do that there. In the US, new guidelines came out last year that all docs provide their asthma patients with a written plan that covers what to do when ill with a cold or flu, just having an attack, etc, etc.

Hi Everyone

I am from Canada and they do normally give out action plans to patients to follow when you have a cold, asthma attack etc. Where I live it is done usually through an asthma clinic where support for asthma patients is offered as well. Unfortunately, I am on alot of daily medication right now so it my asthma worsens I have to see my doctor as soon as possible.

That is why my peRAB pulm switched her on avdair. He has just recently started to see her. 3 months ago. We are covering all the bases, bec the drs before didn't do anything. Even with me asking maybe she neeRAB to be switched to a different preventative. Anyhow, if she neeRAB it well I need to give it. Also she has an infection so that is why such high dosages. Also the change of weather as well, it got cold then warm, then cold again.

Hmm, an asthma plan? Never heard that mentioned in any of my son's doc visits. Not even at his yearly physical. They've always prescribed albuterol or xopenex for my son. Is ventolin different that albuterol? ER doc this last time around wanted me giving him albuterol every 2-3 hours by neb.

In Canada we call it an Asthma Action Plan and if you're asthma is out of controll (and babe it is if you're sucking back your vebtolin that much ) you should aske to be refered to an asthma specialist/plumologist , and they'll get you set up on one . It's really bad use your rescue inhaler so much that it doesn't work when your having an attack ...it can be deadly( though we've ALL done it before). That is one reason not to over use your rescue inhaler but another really importan on is it deplets your potassiusm which is very very very (VERY ) bad ..I almost died from using my rescue inhaler too much and having a bad week of running to the bathroom wiht the diarreah(Sp?) due to IBS and the next thing I knew my heart was doing weird things and I was acting like a complete ditz...major signs of potassium depletion. A few more hours and I would have been dead...my husband now watches me like a hawk when i'm in flare up just in case it happens again...and it was an asthma attack then ended me up in the hospital ,,they checked my heart rate (very erratic) ...then my potassium. Any ways :) the main thing is take your rescue inhaler/ventolin as you need it but if you are taking it more than 2 or 3 times per day you need to get on a daily low dose steroid..like advar or flovent:)good luck!! And remeraber asthma can kill you ...so do get your tush to a doctor and get an asthma action plan ASAP!! Sorry for the spelling mistakes ..I'm in a rush on my way out the door...
