I understand I'll have to carry whatever I want or need in with me, being water, a tent, and food. But I've never done an overnight hike before, so I don't know what kind of pack I need to carry, or what kind of food to carry in. I'm splitting the load between two people, but I want to make it as light as possible. Any ideas or suggestions?

Don't forget to bring a sleeping bag and maybe a pad like a yoga mat to put underneath it to keep you somewhat off the ground. Bring lots of granola or granola bars, GORP (raisins, peanuts, chocolate chips mixed), and some apples for energy. Also make sure you have flashlight or a lantern. I'd say it'd be easiest to bring a bigger pack to keep this all in, and try to distribute it evenly. Overnight camping is fun, but it's not a light job. Have fun!
