Ovarian Cyst/ Abdominal Pain

I have had this nagging pain on the lower right side of my abdomin. It is not severe pain, but it is pretty constant. I feel it sometimes in my hip and sometimes my lower back and sometimes in my waist. I had an ultra-sound that revealed a small ovarian cyst in my LEFT ovary - so my doctor (he is not an OBGYN) said this is not causing my pain since my pain is on the right side and this cyst is on the left. He recommended simply following up with another ultra-sound after my next cycle and referred me to a gastro. My question is this - Can the cyst on the left side cause me pain on the right? And if not, what could this possibly be? I don't really have any other symptoms...
Thank you!

Hi Lia,

The pain may be from the cyst but this is unlikely. One sure way of knowing is to go for that followup ultrasound and if the cyst is gone but the pain is still there ... you will have your answer. Even though a cyst is on the other side, we can experience what is called referred pain.

My own story may help you a little. I too used to experience pain around the pelvic area on one side (in my case, my left side) and in my lower back and inner left thigh. In September of 2007 I had an ultrasound done and they found an 8 cm simple cyst on my left ovary. I thought FOR SURE that my pain was caused by the cyst (as was my irregular bleeding .. another symptom). However, after performing a number of lower back exercises, beefing up the exercise (a walk everyday) and loosing 50 lbs, the pain went away. The cyst, on the other hand, is still there. My irregular bleeding has also been resolved by going off the birth control pill. If it is an external ultrasound that you are having done, try to go for this during your period as this is when it is less likely to show normal follicular cysts (most likely what you have).

In the meantime, perhaps you should investigate into the possibility of the pain coming from the lower back and extending around to your front lower right side. Kinesthesiologists are usually quite good at looking at posture and recommending exercises to help with lower back pain. I myself did not consult one. I found that rounding the back and "tucking in" your tail and then stretching this out for several times a day really helped. I also stretch my lower back by touching my toes. Just be sure that your overall posture is centered when you do this and that you are standing squarely with your legs slightly apart and your knees unlocked. You will want to consult a professional first to make sure that these exercises are right for you. A physiotherapist or kinesthesiologist would help. If it is a back issue, a nice professional massage will also do wonders so you may want to try this as well.

If you find that the pain persists, be sure to go back to your doctor so that further tests can be performed to find the source of the pain.

Best of luck to you.

Hi,

The magic number over here is 10 cm. This morning I went for my latest ultrasound and it is now 8.5 cm so it is getting bigger. I have a strong feeling therefore that surgery is imminent for me. I am still waiting for news from my doctor. Fortunately, the cyst is still only fluid filled, thin walled with no septations etc.. so it looks "safe". The danger now is the size which may at some point cause damage to my organs. I have a long talk with my doctor ahead of me.

As you can see, however, my 8.5 cm cyst does not go with symptoms. Some women have pain with very small cysts. I have a feeling that the cyst you have is a normal follicular cyst that will not be there the next time you have your ultrasound.

Take care and I hope you resolve your problem very soon.

Best,

Estria

hi,

I was told i have two small one on my ovaries 2 years ago had a pelvic ultrasound i think it call and was confirmed. A few month later i started having disabling pain that can last upwards of 10 minute per episode plus violent vomiting at the peak. The doctor seemed not concern so I blew it off. It is now two years later the pain is very bad the vomiting persist and the pains on both side last between 10-30 minutes. I used to have regular periods and now I am lucky if i have one every 2-3 months I am concerned but i do not want another doctor to blow me off. I been researching cysts for awhile now. And the weight gain is terrible. Is there answers to this issue.
