Our split-system heat pump only gives warmer air when turned to a higher temp setting,..

...but not when lower? So basically, several days ago, we noticed that our split-system heat pump wasn't putting out warm air like usual. We usually keep it on 70 degrees unless it's exceptionally cold. We're talking about upper 40's to early 50's on our presently "cold" nights and mornings, since it isn't time for us in Georgia to get weather that is colder than that.

Yet after a little experimenting, when you put it around 72/73 degrees, it gets warm as usual. However, even lately when we put it on 72/73, sometimes it's blowing cool air. We have a machine in the basement with the backup heaters in it (it's apparently gas, because I've seen oven-like flames down there inside of that machine when it lights itself) and a heat pump outside of the house. Both machines are physically working and on at the same time. The air is warm sometimes, and other times, it's not. Sometimes it comes on and runs, then I hear the backup heaters warming up even more while it's already on...and both machines seem to run a lot at the same time for weather that isn't really cold. Someone suggesting spraying out the radiator-type grill around the heat pump outside. But why would this make the air quite warm sometimes and cool other times, when both machines are on and I can hear the flames in the machine light in the basement? What would be wrong?

Why would this be happening?
