Our Mercury Sable 2002 Automatic ?

Fell right out of gear while driving down a road going prob. 30 or so MPH. When the we tried putting it back into gear but the gear shifter wouldn't move. So now our car is setting on the side of the road. What do you think happened? What is wrong? How do we fix it? How much should this cost? (We live in Virginia) Thanks
 
check transmision fluid, try moving the selector from under the car, get a tow truck, get auto box serviced
