FML!!!! I hate these dang canker sores!!!! I have been getting them since I was a child. Anything I eat that pokes my cheek it is a guarenteed canker sore. If I bite my tongue- canker sore. If I try to pick something out of my teeth using my tongue, the constant rubbing will cause me a canker sore. I barely eat chips anymore and chewing gum is risky if I bite my cheek!!! AHHH!!!! Stress also triggers them, but thank goodness nothing like my college days...

I am prone to canker sore and I think I inherited from my mom- she's just as bad. Can someone suggest something that ACTUALLY works??? Right now I'm using a denture paste (cora caine) used for denture sores. It covers the area and numbs for a bit. But because of the location of the canker sores, my glands hurt/ are swollen and since there is one inside my upper lip, my nose hurts. :(. Aside of vitamin d deficiency, I'm pretty healthy. :(

WHY OH WHYYYY!!!!????

First of all I would strongly advise you to see your dentist. He/she can tell if you have a fungal infection or some other problem which needs antibiotic treatment. Ask your dentist about taking L-Lysine,which is a vitamin supplement you can buy in any pharmacy. I used to have terrible problems with mouth sores and I found that certain foods trigger the process: anything acidic like tomatoes, citrus, pineapple, chocolate, vinegar. I can eat these things IN MODERATION, but if I overdo it, I know what to expect. The best course of action is to visit with your dentist first for advice.

Thanks Soibhan for the response. Its nothing fungal. I've gotten them pretty much since infacy. Doctors and dentist just tell me its an uncomfortable thing that I have to ride out. I know there are things to numb the pain but it would be so much better if there was something I could take to stop it from getting big and hurting. Like, if I took it at the first sign, it won't progress. But my mom works in a dental office and I know all the doctors and they tell me there really isn't much that can be done. Just wait it out and otc medication to make it a bit bareable. Last night I was in so much pain I had to take a tylenol! Sometimes they hurt more than other times.

I know some food items are triggers but I have not been able to pin anything down. I've heard about the L-Lysine. Maybe I should invest in them.

There is a prescription mouth wash (pretty cheap - about $10 at K-Mart) that your dentist can give you a scrip for. It's called Magic Mouth Wash...it's white and it works great.
