NB,
Not meaning to interfere about adding machine paper tape, but that
reminded me of my friend's Kansas City, KS family reunion I attended
back in 2007. We had to do something of tourist importance so we drove
to Independence, MO to visit Harry S. Truman's courthouse. In the office
before you got to his courtroom, there was the clerical seating room to
sign in, etc. We chatted it up with the two women historians. I noticed
an old fashioned crank cash register. It only counted to $999. It was
used to accept bail payments. I pushed a few of the keys and pulled the
handle. A bell rang out and the cash drawer sprang open. I jumped back
in alarm, laughed and apologized. It correctly stamped out a receipt on
adding machine paper tape. I carefully pushed the cash drawer closed. I
was tempted to put in a nickel but didn't.
To make matters only worse, in his courtroom we sat in the audience
seating while the women told us more about him but I couldn't resist and
crossed over and sat his bench. What could be worse you ask. While
sitting in his chair, meting out life in prison sentences to everyone, I
picked up the phone on the bench yelling "fry the BUM!!!"
If you've never seen two elderly white women historian guides turn more
white, you should've been there! We apparently charmed them somehow
because we were allowed to leave without any wrist jewelry on. Maybe it
had something to do with a California gold rush BUM!!! and a
Philadelphia liberty bell BUM!!! unexpectedly arriving, eagerly curious,
on a quiet Saturday in Independence, MO at their door, AT THE SAME TIME!
LOL!!!
We then visited one of his whistle stop railroad cars. It was in
shambles from decades of neglect. We could only look in, not walk
through. It sat parked steps from the train station. The tracks seemed
shiny enough to still be in use but for non-stop pass through trains.
We laughed about the visit all the way to Arthur Bryant's for a late
afternoon BBQ dinner and breathed a joking sigh of relief when we
crossed the state line into Kansas City, KS.
We DID sign the visitor's guest book. My comment... "Loved the tour.
Thanks."
We met Independence and they met us.
