Newspapers are reporting that, for about a month, hackers had access to
computers "of at least 10 federal ministers including the Prime Minister,
Foreign Minister and Defence Minister."

That's not much of a surprise. Nobody expects Australian government
officials to be computer-savvy (it's a pleasant surprise when they're
literate!), and Australian network security lags behind the first-world
nations by ten years or more.

What I find odd is the statement that "Australian intelligence agencies were
tipped off to the cyber-spy raid by US intelligence officials within the
Central Intelligence Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

How did the CIA and the FBI know? Did they see some intelligence traffic and
assume that those computers were where the stolen e-mails were coming from?
Or was it something else? Do you suppose the CIA also hacks into those
computers, and observed their fellow intruders as they plundered the
information trove of Australia's highest officials?

A follow-on article goes on to say that "the level of infiltration is now
believed to have been more widespread than first reported," and that
Australia is attempting to bring up its governmental cyber-security to the
levels practised by the USA. Not bloody likely to succeed without competent
security professionals, so now Australia has to go a-begging to the USA for
help in securing their networks, like a first-form student begging his
master to "give us a hint"!

I'm sure it must seem that way to you, Julana, or Peter, or whatever your
real name is. Why so defensive? Do you believe that Australians are innately
inferior? If not, doesn't your reaction seem a bit excessive?
