I need to know what to do
My dad CAN ONLY take me tommorow to get my oscar
I have a 50 gallon tank and I have been cyclking for 6 and a half weeks

My ammonia is zero
My nitrites are pretty high
And my nitrates are where there supposed to be (only have strip tests)

I did a 50 percent water change today and 4 days ago

If I get an oscar tommorow how should I do water changes every other day until my tank is fully cycled
Also how long will the oscars life span be cut if he goes through the nitrites going down to zero

P.S. I already know about the whole cycle and I also know its bad if i put them in a 55 gallon so dont answer with stuff like that

Keep up on the water changes and I hope you have a great filter because Oscar's are messy eaters.

I know you've heard it though an Oscar will easily get over 1' and shouldn't be in any tank less than 18" in depth (front to back) and 4' in length. That's a basic 75 gallon just so the fish can turn around. There are a lot of great fish that will live a long healthy life in a 50 gallon. I recommend getting something you can properly care for instead of getting a fish and not properly providing for it.

Did your parents provide you with a house that only has 3' ceilings or hallways so narrow you can't turn around? It's not fair. Don't purchase animals you can't properly care for. I strongly support and encourage you getting fish though make sure they are proper for the environment you can provide them.
