None of the actors who won the 4 acting awarRAB were American, and two of them didn't have English as their native tongue.

Has this happened before?

Marion Cotillard - French
Tilda Swinton - British
Daniel Day-Lewis - British
Javier Bardem - Spanish

Yes. It happened in 1964. The winners at that time were:

BEST ACTOR: Rex Harrison ("My Fair Lady")

BEST ACTRESS: Julie Andrews ("Mary Poppins")

BEST SUPPORTIN ACTOR: Peter Ustinov ("Topkapi")

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Lila Kedrova ("Zorba the Greek")

I realise it is a bit of a shock but it wasn't unexpected. DDL was expected to win since the Golden Globes as was Javier Bardem.

Marion Cotillard was a surprise but the expected winner was Julie Christie, again not American. And although Tilda Swinton was also a surprise, it was believed the award would go to Cate Blanchett, an Aussie.

It's not like the Americans didn't have any notice of it and it won't hurt for their collective egos to take a bit of a knock. Plus there were plenty of US victories in other categories, Director, Picture, both screenplays, animation etc.

And watch, next year there will be four US acting winners!

That's a silly quote. :)

Nationality-wise, we don't care who wins. Most people would love to see a favorite of theirs win, but no one cares where that person comes from. And regardless of who wins, it's all forgotten within a week. :)

Actually thinking about it you're right, there's no reason at all that the industry would be annoyed because apart from Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose, all of the films were American anyway so the studio bosses will be perfectly happy.

And you're right, 6,000 people from the industry cast votes for the categories, enough of them must have voted for these individuals.

However, I do think that next year there will be 4 American winners just to make sure things balance!

yep, and watch one category see 4 brits up against the sole american, with the American winning, despite it being possible they are the least deserving recipient

And what if the least deserving recipient is a Brit?

Anyway, I've yet to come across any Americans complaining about none of the US acting nominees winning anything (which I have to admit I doubt would be the case if it was, say, the BAFTAs and the nationalities were reversed). They seem to be more upset about the show getting the lowest ratings ever...

You must be talking about the year Helen Hunt beat out four other non-americans. That was a travesty and I think the academy realised it, hence the good results from Sunday.
