Hey I'm a former sufferer of acne and I still have a bit in places. I just wanted to know if it was true that your diet had a direct effect on acne. Any input is appreciated.

I'm pretty sure (not 100% sure) that it's caused by having dirty skin. That's why when you pop it, some kind of 'paste' comes out (which is that dirt accumulation). Personally, I think 'eating chocolate gives you acne' is just a myth because if you think about it, how eating chocolate put dirt into your face?

There are probably many causes for acne but I can tell you for sure that food does affect the severity of my acne. If I were to drink 2 cans of soda I would see large cysts forming by day's end. The same would happen if I ate a burger and fries or a lot of pizza. Dermatologist who insist someone's diet has no effect on acne are just plain naive. It is probably not the only (or even main) cause of acne but diet plays a role.

As for the above poster mentioning dirt on the face: My acne was at it's worst when I use to wash my face three times a day. Dirt is not really the answer for most people; at least I don't think.

I think it's more complicated than dirt.

I think diet can be very influential for people with acne. Besides, if food can rot your teeth, contribute to heart disease, create problems with irritable bowel syndrome, and damage your liver, why is it unbelievable that it can affect the largest organ system in the body (skin)?

Basically, being healthy, including how you eat, is better for your skin than the alternative. The less processed food and alcohol I consume, the less acne I have.
