...following experimental errors? c) You mistakenly extracted the dichloromethane solution with 5% HCl rather than NaHCO3 (within the dichloromethane layer is dissolved aspirin and acetanilide)

d) Instead of using pH paper, you neutralized the NaHCO3 solution to pH 7 using litmus paper.

These are questions from organic lab that completely stump me. Would HCl react at all? I know that when the NaHCO3 reacts with aspirin, it forms sodium acetylsalicylate that dissolves into an aqueous layer so that aspirin separates from acetanilide, but not so sure about HCl. Further, the litmus/pH paper completely loses me as well. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!
