Opt-out of Verizon 'sharing' your information

Last week Verizon sent out a letter that basically said "you have 45 days to opt-out of 'agreeing' to let us share your Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI), which includes billing info, calling info, and services purchased with 'affiliates, agents and parent companies.'" This was sent out as a reminder that they do not sell information to these affiliates - right, they just give it to them.

I honestly don't want Verizon sharing this info with affiliate companies, do you? All they're going to do is advertise their product to us. This is exactly why you get letters in the mail advertising FIOS when you already have FIOS

You have to do some serious digging to figure out how to opt-out online. Luckily I found the link. Here it is:

This is assuming you have your account setup on verizonwireless.com

If you don't the other option is to call customer service and tell them you want to opt-out your CPNI information: 1-800-333-9956

Well, they did it with the good in mind.

I believe they followed Sprint and AT&T's example where it is in your customer agreement that they reserve the right to share your information.

Luckily, you like I, could unsubscribe.

yeah as i rem it did take a little digging to get to the small print/un check box
you can bet vzw gets something in return, big corps dont give out any type data unless it benefits them, not knock vzw for this, it is standard biz sense
though they certainly could be more upfront about it

Every carrier does this...most carriers just put in fine print that they are allowed to sell your information when you sign the contract.

Verizon Wireless doesn't; however, therefore they decided to do it this way.

Do you know if they sell.... I mean give out our names and numbers as well as what we do with our phones? I don't have an issue with them giving away what I do as long as they can't tell it's me doing those things.

Well they don't actually sell your information.

They do not profit from your information...they GIVE it away to make more innovative products.

They give it away anonymously.

Um, I think you are all over-reacting.

Verizon has long had a very public stance of protecting their customer's information, from not agreeing to add their database to the national phonebook initiative, to suing spammers.

The lawyers advised them that they had to provide this opt-out mechanism to prevent ANY possibility of lawsuits ... since they do share your information with third party vendors when you sign up for product like Backup Assistant and VZNavigator, which are provided in part by other companies.

But opt out if it makes you feel better. Just remember you've done so when you call Verizon Wireless and spend an hour on the phone trying to figure out why Chaperone isn't working, because the tech rep won't be able to see you've opted out and so the app is being blocked from accessing your information.
