Your dollar bill hands were always only on loan
curled tightly like cigarette paper
though instead of a nicotine center
filled empty

excepted for the faces of men
I couldn't know
countless presidents
dead and honored

They meant more to you
then they could to me
They meant more to you
then we ever could

You collected their bored expressions
with a certain vigor

You'd count your children like silver dollars
and dismiss their penny eyes
wide with fascination
shining at your presence

pennies were only disposable
benjamin franklin withstood the test of time

Your wife was liquid gold
she can't stop you from your civil affairs
with your work
from sleeping with the promise of promotion

We were at the mercy
of your dollar bill hands
we were money
that had long since been spent

I realized that your quarter fingernails
were spent all along
