more likely to happen when your out and about. The penalty for having it your car is great. Also car break ins are more common than house break ins. Best to keep it at home.
Get a concealed carry permit so you can take it with you wherever you go legally. I'm pretty sure it is illegal to have a gun in your car without a permit. So till you get that permit keep it in your home.
