It's been a year to the day since my surgery and heres what I've learned.
Sitting in the hospital for 5 days drugged out of your mind isn't that fun.
When you get home I hope you have someone as commited to helping out as I had in my daughter and ex wife. It was a slow recovery for me and couldn't seem to get off the drugs as easy as my first surgery. Don't plan on going back to work quickly (not that I have a job).
When you start feeling decent after 6 weeks or so DON'T try and do more than you should. I was throwing wood around the stack getting the dry in front. I didn't cause any damage but I could of and it's not something i ever want to go through again.
Walk as soon as you can and get a nice sturdy cane just in case. Took me a while to build up but walked 3 miles before my three month check up and walk as often as possible which is at least five times a week.
Three month check up went well and said fusion looked six months instead of three. Tell me news like that and of course I started smoking a cigar a day plus a few cigs. Durab as dirt and once again on the one year date my daughter and I both are quitting again.
Still had pain in sacrum up until my DO finally fixed me up in April after three tries. Told surgeon my idea that after walking around bent over for 5 years rest of the bone structure was having to adjust to new posture. He said no. DO agreed with my idea. Big pain in tail bone which is hardly noticed now but is still there. Surgeons just like the cutting art of surgery not talking to you afterwarRAB. At least he did it right,
I wish I could share all the details of my exercise program which I culled from many different tapes and rehab sessions before and after surgery over 5 years. Getting nice tight abs covered by fat at 53. At least I got down under 180 at last-around 190 at surgery time.
So I waited till April to feel really good some days and okay the others. I probably only had 5 days of pain free days before that and many where I just sat with an ice pack on my lower back.
SO here it is a year later and I'm so glad I opted for surgery. My liife has changed for the better. My garden looks great even though it was 28 out this AM and I can pick weeRAB. Mow the lawn with a self propeled push mowed instead of the lawn tractor when I can. Can't play golf yet but thats okay. Maybe could if I did some more stretches for motion but just trying for strength and relaxation and lots of hamstring work. Started lifting weights during CUBS games. Maybe I'll make a DVD of my exercises some day. Of course everyone is different. Good luck to all of your backs.
