One piece Gol D. Roger?

Was Gol D. Roger like Luffy in term of Being a GOOD guy character, as most characters who speak of their personal encounter with Roger only pass good comments about him. (Any facts about his personalities would be nice)
 
I think they both have their own view on what is right and wrong and us being the spectators in their lives happen to think that "WOW that's pretty nice and noble of him he MUST be good"

defying common sense, they're still technically bad because they're pirates. And in their world that's against the law, but hey Luffy's made of rubber in the world of one piece.
