I am only allowed to include one counterargument into my essay. So, which one is better: rights or stress? In a nutshell, this is what I'm thinking of running:
Rights: Smokers believe that they have the freedom to do what they please, including smoking. I say that smoking violates the First Amendment. A person's rights end when another's begins. Smoking is extremely deadly to everyone around (non-smokers), and the affects of smoking are even worse for the secondhand smokers. Therefore smoking should be prohibited, because it hurts others and others' rights.
Stress: Most smokers' excuse for continuing to smoke is that smoking cigarettes helps them to relieve stress and pressure from the outside world. However, numerous studies have shown that smoking does not relieve stress, but it does the opposite: smoking actually intensifies one's stress. The stress levels of smokers are higher than those of nonsmokers. Smoking promotes anxiety and anger. Thus prohibiting smoking will encourage peace and relaxtation in the Unites States.
My 2 other points are about how smoking is deadly to the smoker, and how smoking has harmful consequences to everyone else around.
