On my verizon emV 3, whats does EV 1X mean for status at the top of my screen?

So for the status on the top of the screen it says EV followed by 4 bars and under that 1X followed by 4 bars. The bars change sometimes, is this like my service bars? And why is it like that/what does it mean?
