On my local ballot last year.........some of the seats for judges were vacant

and unopposed...no one ran..? So let me understand this:

Any lawyer off the street could have collected 100 signatures or so, and gotten on the ballot, and automatically win?

That sounds a little too good to be true.

Doesn't every lawyer in the world want to become a judge?

Judges are more prestigious.
They have more authority.
They get paid more.

i just don't understand how a public elected judicial seat could remain vacant with no one running for it?
