On my 2001 ES-V6 Mazda Tribute....?

I have an automatic mazda tribute the gear shifter has an overdrive button. When I press it a light goes on saying "O/D Off". does that mean its off or on? Because when I start the car, normally I believe its off. And im not towing anything...so what should it be? Should I press the button so it says it off or leave it?
