On late-night chat shows, why is the guest always seated to the right of the host?

I'm sure there's a reason for this. Pretty much every chat show host I can think of (eg. Jay Leno, David Letterman, Jonathan Ross, Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O'Brien, Craig Ferguson) has his guests sitting to his right, so that we see the guest on the left of the screen and the host on the right.

Has anyone else noticed this and does anyone have an explanation for why this is done?
