On Facebook chat, when I click on a picture of my friends, the chat box doesn't pop up.?

Like today, I clicked on my friend where it said "Friends Online" and a chat box didn't appear. I then clicked on one of my other friends and then it only showed only them in the "Friends Online" column.

Also, do they know that I have clicked on there name if I don't type anything?
