On FaceBook,can I appear offline to chat people...?

...but still see which of them are on? I click options and go offline, and I know that makes me look offline, but then I can't see who is online. When I open the box again, I appear online to them.

you used to be able to appear offline but still be able to chat when fb chat first came on but I believe there is no way now. If you want to hide from certain people you could make a friend list and appear offline for them but be able to chat with others but there's a bug that's not letting that work for some reason but it's supposed to work like that.
