on a 2003 ford focuse when u turn on defrost the car dies any body know why ?

its been wrecked in the front when i bought it and some one cut the battery cables
 
could be a bad alternator, when the defroster turns on it draws so much power the engine can't stay running because it needs electricity too. Or this wiring has been patched together poorly
