thurmond was more involved in the 50s act, where he spoke for 24hrs in that filibuster, as a democrat. Byrd was the one who spoke for 14 hrs against the 64 civil rights act, again he was & is a democrat.

yup people were more racist 50 years ago. Doesn't excuse bigots like Rand Paul from being racist nowadays.

Yup. It's funny when Democrats like Hawkeye refuse to hold their CURRENT leaders accountable.

I should know this, but who is the guy in the pic? Is he currently in congress?

Sounds like we need some posters this November!

Senator Robert "ex-KKK leader" Byrd from West Virginia.

He was the Senate Majority Whip for 6 years. Senate Majority Leader for 4 years. Senate Minority Leader for 6 years. Chairman of the Appropriations Committee. As the longest running Democrat, he's served as President pro tempore four times.

Basically he is a very well respected and highly positioned DEMOCRAT. And no, that photo hasn't been doctored. In the KKK, he held the titles of Kleagle (recruiter) and Exalted Cyclops ... when he wrote "I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

there's no statute of limitations on being an ass to a politician is there? does he have any racist kids?
