Before we had a whole list of ridiculous sub-genres of Metal we had:
Heavy Metal
Thrash Metal
Speed Metal
Death Metal
and that's it. I know music is always evolving. I am just getting all nostalgic for when Metal was simplified and we did'nt have to label every band or invent a new sub-genre. Here are some of my faves from the 80's.
Dio-Holy Diver (1983)

He's a short arse git and his lyric are terrible yet he represents Heavy Metal succinctly in the 80's. OTT, preposterous but essential. (just noticed this is an edited version-gutted!)
Slayer-Raining Blood(1986)

Still the greatest Thrash Metal track ever. 22 years old and still astonishing.
Tankard-The Morning After(1987)

Legendary German booze heaRAB whose albums were just a blur of speed and beer references (they were'nt supposed to be taken seriously!) yet despite the tomfoolery, were musically very tight.
Death-Open Casket(1988)

Many fans cite the later Death years as the best but this where the genre grew and formed. The drumming on this track is nothing short of amazing-check the drums out at 2:45 onwarRAB.
Yes there are many many more tracks that could sum up this era but these are definitely some defining moments.
