Old Navy return question?

so i was just at old navy and the cashier gave me two options for my return(without a receipt). she said i could either have a merchandise certificate or a mail certificate. i went with the mail certificate because she said she would have to call her manager up there for the other one. what is the difference? i dont understand why there are two refund options. please help
