Okay, I've never seen this on the check at a bar/restaurant?

I went to a bar & grill today, that used to be a Bennigan's. My friend and I did have a few beers in the bar area. When the guy I was with gave his card to pay, the waitress came back with a receipt that said 'Authorized Driver: his name. I realize it has something to do with covering their ass if we had an accident on the way home, but can someone give me more details about that? As often as I've been out to places like that, I've never seen that.
 
sounds like you were drinking too much are you should your read that right, but if so, yep...its called covering their butts, not they should have too..people should know NOT to drink and drive, and not blame others when they do
 
Did your friend have fewer drinks than you? Did they watch to make sure that HE was the one to drive away? If not, this does nothing to cover their a$$.
