ok, so how much money do you think wed need to get across America, backpacking?

so, living simply (youth hostels, food, basic stuff sleeping in a van) and just checking out some stuff, how much money would it take for me and 2 friends to backpack/hitchhike from New York to Los Angeles. and can i get some explanation behind it, not just an estimate? thanks a lot! : )
