Ok...how do you apply game shark cheats?

Like someone gave me the game shark codes for onimusha, i kno really old but i did the others and then decided to go back and beat the first. I have the codes but dont kno how to make them work and honestly im tired of getting my butt kicked in the dark realm=[[
Like the codes are letters and numbers so im confused
