Oil useage

I've an opinion about this that cost me my job @ (hchd). That opinion is; correctly breaking in a new air cooled v twin motor has everything to with power that motor will produce, it's fuel efficiency and what volume of oil it might consume. Please do not read this like I'm implying you have damaged or diminished your bike in any way even if you took delivery of it new. What I do know is All new engines have freshly machined surfaces throughout the power train that must be mated to one another in such a way as to not cook the two together. The most prevalent example of this is forcing the process of "seating" the piston rings. After 107 years of constant massage and refinement the Motor Company (TMC) manufactures unequalled examples of its constantly evolving product. Most riders that are conscious of this do a respectable job breaking in their machine. However, I know some dealerships that say breakin is complete Bu*lsh*t "ride it like u stole it" Even better I know a dealership that will build any hi-po motor you want and slam it immediatly on their dyno and about red line it over & over again "till they get it RIGHT!" creating a custom race tuned ignition map for you. If you think that's great you will be happy 2 know they will grow quickly tired of your concerns about lifter and valve train noise, piston slap and excessive oil consumption. They don't care. They only wanted the sale and are creaming all over themselves you opted for a motor too! I'm not sayn u did any damage to your motor just that missing oil can only b on the floor or out the pipe. Some oil consumption is completly normal especially covering long distance in the heat. Some of the heightest oil consumption is the HE&L and torture of parade duty and certain times and dates around Sturgis. Its been 3 years now maybe they are doing things like I suggested now that the flamboyant economies stumble ... it was a truly life changing experience & wouldn't trade it for anything. Not that you asked, i offer this Perfectly A%6al Breakin (according 2 me) HD 20/50 petroleum for the first 2000 miles changing every 500 miles; RPMs under 3000 for the first 500 without lugging the engine 3500 for the next 1000 miles, as you would normally for the last 500 then switch to Amzoil 20/50 winter AHR 60 summer. Most riders have the patience required to perform this breakin but are just unaware. I would take delivery of the machine in the morning & then proceed to spend the rest of the day heat cycling the motor every hour till close I might even pretend to leave a couple a times but I'd come right back. just testing. by the time I'd rollout with my next sled I'll know EVERYONE that works there. If syn3 were a true synthetic none of the motors delivered from TMC would EVER breakin and thus never achieve full compression and thus full power, but they do. The TMC will not pursue warranty issues without extensive dealer documented history tracking and I will not disclose the guidelines because they are higher then I'd accept as normal (any). Doesn't really matter if anyone believes me about this because I have hundreds of fellow riders that cannot thank me enough because of how their machines perform. Seams almost a shame when I do change my oil but its only because freezing mornings and nights really drag that 60 wt. When I look at what's coming out its still TRANSPARENT try finding that in another oil. Amzoil Rules! Any misconception stems from the fact air cooled motors need SOME heat for expansiI would take delivery of the machine in the morning & then proceed to spend the rest of the day heat cycling the motor every hour till close I might even pretend to leave a couple a times but I'd come right back. just testing. by the time I'd rollout with my next sled I'll know EVERYONE that works there.on in order to SEAL. The thing alot forget is true synthetic motors have a lot less friction and fail to adjust their warm up time accordingly ... and tend to have a lot more leaks. Since the Army I've wrenched with a Sharpie and am compelled to keep meticulous records. I can write in all honesty I have no idea how far some Harley-Davidsons can run with NO oil consumption. My brother JPs 04FLTRUCISE @ over 140k Chris 95XL1200C Tom 02FLTRUCI & I are @ better then 80k Running clear with warm up no leaks. have fun & #ridesafe

Mine has about 4500 miles on it now and no oil consumption. Getting ready for the 5000 mile service and haven't had to add any since changing it at 1000. I'm using dino in it now and will put in Mobile 1Vtwin 20w50 when I change it in 500 miles.

16k on mine and i havent seen any oil usage. I broke it in just as suggested in the manual . Ran regular oil for the first 5k then switched to synthetic The manual states no highway prolonged speeds till after 500 miles. at 500 miles I ran 3 hours pretty much straight home from Indiana at 75/80 mph .. Seemed to work well..
