Oil sending unit in Ford Explorer 1997?

What does an oil sending unit do? Can it cause you not to have pressure or does it just control the oil gauge in the vehicle?
We'll have oil pressure for about 10 minutes then loose it. It either fights like the pressure is trying to go up or we loose it completely. Then if we turn the vehicle off for about 1/2 an hour we get the pressure back.
We tried cleaning it out with the fuel cleaner like mechanic said...

We have a 1997 Ford Explorer V8 5.0

it sends the info to the gauge, it can go bad and send false readings, try a new one, also it's a good idea to read your oil pressure with a live gauge.. if you have oil on the stick and the engine isn't making funny noises, it's probably just the sending unit gone bad..

it sends sigal to the guage, and can give false readings
replace it and that shoul fix the problem, for if the truck had no oil pressure you would probably from running 10 minutes heard it knocking or rattling
good luck
