Oil pressure drops on '97 4.0 Ford Ranger/Mazda B4000?

I have a 1997 Mazda B4000 (same as Ford Ranger) with the oil pressure gauge fluctuates at times and every 30 seconds to a minute it drops right down to the bottom showing no oil pressure. When this happens the engine also starts ticking/pinging then smooths out when the gauge pops back up a 2-8 seconds later. I am thinking maybe the oil pump but a friend suggested I try to think simple first. Could something else be causing this problem?
 
DON'T run if the pressure goes down....it WILL damage the engine.the tapping you hear it either the hydraulic tappets or/and the main bearing shells knocking...not good...
4 things,cheapest first.
1,have you enough oil in[ive got to ask].
2,a blocked oil filter,change it.
3,a blocked oil pump sieve/pickup inthe sump.
4,a shafted oil pump......
.....it will be one of these...good luck.
