oil in my honda civic?

i bought a 94 honda civic dx and have 2 questions, one is why does my a/c only work when car is driving, if i stop it stops working, even with the car on, example leave it on for my wife while i go in the store, it stops working, and second is i changed my oil few days ago on wednesday i put 1,000 miles so far now the dipstick reads half way, and oil it dark, but just changed it, can anyone help me out
