Off the path camping spots in San Diego, CA?

I moved here recently from the south, and I enjoy camping from time to time. I'm used to building my own shelter out of sticks and starting a fire with a bow. But what I'm quickly learning is it's not as simple as walking out the back door, hiking for a few miles, and then building a shelter here. Here I guess there's all kinds of laws regarding where you can build a fire or even camp.

So, I tried looking up campsites here in San Diego, CA and I found all of these places meant for tents that come with fire pits where you have to reserve a spot for half a year ahead and pay for it. One, I don't want to use a tent nor do I want a fire pit, I do everything from scratch. Two, I don't want to pay for it, I've never had to before. Three, I don't want to have to wait six months every time I get the urge to camp.

Does anybody know of a few places I can go to camp where I can legally light a fire like I used to? Preferably a wooded area? I'm just looking for some off-the-beaten-path route to escape the city for a weekend. All help is very appreciated, I'm going stir crazy in this apartment.
