There will be pie at the White House this Thanksgiving. Tons of it. Nine types, to be precise.
The fitness-conscious First Family appeared likely to splurge a bit on Thursday. On the menu: Huckleberry Pie, Pecan Pie, Chocolate Cream Pie, Sweet Potato Pie, Peach Pie, Apple Pie, Pumpkin Pie, Banana Cream Pie and Coconut Cream Pie. It also included the usual staples: turkey, honey-baked ham and sweet potatoes.
“We’ll be spending today just like many of you – sitting down with family and friends to eat some good food, tell stories, watch a little football, and most importantly, count our blessings,” President Obama said in his weekly address, posted on You Tube.
The guest list remained private as of Thursday afternoon, suggesting the first family has opted for a low-key Thanksgiving celebration at home this year. (In years past, first families have often spent the holiday at Camp David.)
Before digging into the spread, Obama took some time to speak with 10 American service members. He was careful not to play favorites with the services, dialing up two soldiers, two Marines, two sailors, two airmen and two members of the Coast Guard. A White House statement about the calls didn’t note whether any of the troops who spoke to the commander in chief were deployed.
“He thanked them for their service and he wished them and their families a Happy Thanksgiving,” the White House said.
