I am for preventative care not because I think it may save money, but because it will create a healthier population.

Did I say that I don't want to spend MY money on preventative health care for ME?

Sorry, nope. I never said that. I never even hinted at that.

Now, what I have hinted at is that I do not want to pay higher taxes so that the government can give SOMEONE ELSE my money IN THE HOPES that they spend it on preventative health care ... all the while allowing people to smoke, parachute, bungie jump, have unprotected sex, use IV drugs, etc, etc.

But I'll play "pretend".

In you fantasy land where everyone pays for their own health care (and it isn't wealth redistribution) and for some dumb reason I don't want to spend my own money on prolonging my life, I'd guess I'd spend my money on fast cars/motorcycles, flashy clothes, guns, and generally things that will entertain me and make my quality of life while I am healthy worth living.

Keeping our population healthy will make everyone live longer and will cause a greater burden on social security.

Tobacco Industry is a great example of preventitive programs that save the health care industry money.

we currently don't have a system that provides incentives to be healthy.

so...i'm guessing that you're done here?

someone has been doing googling about preventive care and costs

sorry champ, you were wrong and have been for months

the best "preventative care" consists of a healthy lifestyle. it's pointless to pay for more regular checkups when the lifestyles of citizens are not healthy.

Let me illustrate the ideal situation:

The government doesn't pay for your regular checkups, nor will it pay for your big treatments and hospital bills. So what does the average citizen do about it? They eat healthier and engage in healthier behaviors with the knowledge that if something goes wrong, THEY will have to pay for it, or their insurance will, which gets more and more expensive based on how unhealthy their lifestyle is.

Here's what WILL happen:

Citizens expect the government to pay for their medical costs, so they aren't worried if something will happen to them. Because in this scenario, it is entirely out of their hands. If they smoke their whole life and are at greater risk for lung cancer or emphysema, that's fine, because it's not coming out of their pocket (the tax dollars are, though, but they won't see it that way).

The average citizen will think that the evil rich corporations will do their part and help them with their health, because the evil rich corporations and wealthy individuals OWE the rest of humanity this one thing, right?
