WASHINGTON — President Obama on Thursday morning announced his choice of Penny Pritzker, an heir to the Hyatt Hotel fortune and a longtime financial backer of the president, to be the new commerce secretary.
The announcement was made by Mr. Obama shortly before the president departed for a three-day trip to Mexico and Costa Rica.
The president also selected Michael Froman, a top national security official, to be the new United States trade representative, the official said.
